Empire State Highway Contractors Association Recruit Apprentices

Frankfort, NY (December 06, 2012) -

The Empire State Highway Contractors Association, Inc. will conduct a recruitment from February 6, 2013 through February 5, 2014 for the following apprentices:  four carpenter (heavy/highway), four operating engineer (grading & paving equipment), and eight skilled construction craft laborers, State Labor Commissioner Peter M. Rivera announced today.

Applications will be available at Empire State Highway Contractors Association, 2481 Higby Road, Frankfort, NY, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on the first Wednesday of each month, excluding legal holidays, or online at http://www.empirestatehighwaycontractors.org/ during the recruitment period. All applications must be received no later than February 12, 2014.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must have a high school diploma or general equivalency diploma (G.E.D.).
  • Must be physically able to perform the work required, as determined by being able to lift and carry materials weighing at least 50 pounds. (Some job assignments will require no heavy lifting while others will require heavy lifting on a daily basis.) Physical examination may be required by signatory contractors and a mandatory drug and alcohol test may be administered at the expense of the sponsor - attest by signing a notarized affidavit if accepted.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from work sites and classes of related instruction - attest by signing a notarized affidavit if accepted.
  • Must have valid driver's license to operate company vehicles - attest by signing a notarized affidavit if accepted.
  • Must have six (6) months trade-related experience for carpenter (heavy/highway) and operating engineer (grading & paving equipment) trades - not applicable for skilled construction craft laborer applicants.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner.  Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status.  Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs.  Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
