Sheet Metal Workers Recruit Apprentices

Brewster, NY (December 27, 2012) -

The Sheet Metal Workers Craft Training Fund Local Union #38 will conduct a recruitment from January 21, 2013 through December 30, 2013 for 15 sheet metal worker apprentices, State Labor Commissioner Peter M. Rivera announced today.

Applications can be obtained at Local Union #38, 38 Starr Ridge Road, Brewster, NY, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must have a high school diploma or general equivalency diploma (GED), as recognized by official school authorities.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.
  • Must be willing to travel within the jurisdiction of the Local Union #38 (Westchester, Putnam, Rockland, Dutchess, Orange, Ulster and Sullivan counties in New York; Fairfield and Litchfield counties in Connecticut) to a shop or job site and supply their own transportation, or use mass transit.
  • Must submit to drug testing at the committee's expense - if selected for the program.
  • Must take math test administered by Local Union # 38 - trade requires extensive amount of math skills and work with rulers.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner.  Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status.  Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs.  Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
