Laborers Recruit Apprentices

Ithaca, NY (December 03, 2012) -

The Laborers International Union of North America Local Union #785 (Ithaca Region) will conduct a recruitment from December 3, 2012 through December 2, 2013 for three skilled construction craft laborer apprentices, State Labor Commissioner Peter M. Rivera announced today.

Applications will be available at Local Union #785, 622 West State Street, Ithaca, NY from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period. Applications are available at Workforce One-Stop Centers throughout Broome, Chemung, Chenango, Cortland, Delaware, Schuyler, Steuben, Tioga, and Tompkins counties. Applications may also be obtained by mail.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must have a minimum of a 10th grade education.
  • Must be physically able to perform the work required, as determined by applicant's signed affidavit. The work includes:
    • Working with sharp objects and hazardous machinery, and possible exposure to loud noise and respiratory irritants. It may also include prolonged lifting, standing, walking, kneeling, and repeated squatting and/or bending.
    • Working under exposure to temperature extremes - outside on winter days, or inside in confined areas where high temperatures may be reached.
    • The lifting and/or moving of heavy objects and equipment.
    • Working off ladders and scaffolds at protected heights.
  • Must have valid driver's license - apprentices will be required to operate contractor's vehicles.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from related instruction and worksites throughout the jurisdictional area, which includes the following counties:
    • Broome County - Entire county.
    • Chenango County - Entire county with the exception of the townships of Sherburne, Columbus and New Berlin.
    • Tioga County - townships of Richford, Berkshire, Newark Valley, Tioga, Owego, Barton and Nichols.
    • Delaware County - townships of Sidney, Masonville, Walton, Tompkins, Deposit, Hancock and Colchester.

    Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner.  Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status.  Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs.  Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
