Laborers Recruit Apprentices

Niagara Falls, NY (August 06, 2012) -

The Joint Apprenticeship Committee of the Educational and Training Fund of Laborers' Local Union #91 will conduct a recruitment from September 4, 2012 through September 3, 2013 for four skilled construction craft laborer apprentices, State Labor Commissioner Peter M. Rivera announced today. 

Applications will be available in-person only at Local Union # 91, 4500 Witmer Industrial Estates, Niagara Falls, NY from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. the first Tuesday of each month, excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period. Applications must be completed in person and on site.

The Committee requires that all applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old; proof of age is required.
  • Must have a high school diploma or general equivalency diploma (G.E.D.); proof required.
  • Must have a medical examination conducted by an approved provider after indenture into the program.
  • Must be physically able to perform the duties of a skilled construction craft laborer by signing an affidavit. The work includes the ability to:
    • Lift and carry ten 94-pound sacks a distance of 25 feet, and restack them to a height of approximately 54 inches.
    • Shovel 1/2 cubic yard of material into a wheelbarrow, wheel 30 feet and deposit into a container.
    • Work at heights of 10 feet or greater.
    • Work in confined spaces.
  • Must agree to post-acceptance drug test, to be randomly administered and paid for by the union.
  • Must have reliable transportation to work and related educational training.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner.  Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status.  Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs.  Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
