Hauppauge, NY (August 25, 2017) -

The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for Northeast Carpenters will conduct a recruitment from August 22, 2017 through August 30, 2018 for five carpenter apprentices, the New York State Department of Labor announced today.

Applications must be obtained and submitted in person at the Carpenters Training Center, 270 Motor Parkway, Dept. B, Hauppauge, NY, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period. Applicants must bring their driver’s license or other state-issued ID card, Social Security card, and their high school diploma or high school equivalency diploma. Applications must be received no later than August 30, 2018.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as TASC or GED).
  • Must be physically able to perform the work required of a carpenter, which may include:
    • Working on scaffolds and in confined spaces.
    • Working outdoors in all weather conditions.
    • Performing constant repetitive motions.
    • Climbing and working from heights.
    • Lifting items over 50 pounds.
    • Standing and stooping for prolonged periods of time.
  • Must be a resident of Nassau or Suffolk counties for at least six months.
  • Must have reliable means of transportation to and from various job sites and related instruction classes.
  • Must be prepared to take a math and measurement computation test at the time of application. If an applicant should not pass the entrance test, it does not disqualify them from consideration.
  • Must attend related instruction at an Empire State Carpenters Regional Training Facility for four one-week periods, during each of the four years of apprenticeship.
  • Must pass a post-offer drug test, at the expense of the sponsor. If an applicant tests positive, they cannot reapply for one year.
  • Must provide DD-214, Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty, if applicable, after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must participate in an interview, if eligible.

For further information, applicants should contact their nearest New York State Department of Labor office or the Empire State Carpenters Apprenticeship Committee at (631) 952-9555.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner.
