Electricians Recruit Apprentices

Niagara Falls, NY (June 04, 2019) -

The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for Niagara County Electricians Local Union #237 will conduct a recruitment from July 17, 2019 through July 15, 2020 for three electrician (Housewire or Residential) apprentices and 12 electrician apprentices, the New York State Department of Labor announced today.

Please note that the openings listed for apprentices represent the total number for two recruitment regions - the Finger Lakes and Western regions.

Applications are available online at http://www.ibew237.com/application-process. Applications can be printed and mailed to JATC for Niagara County Electricians Local Union #237, PO Box 120, 8803 Niagara Falls Blvd., Niagara Falls, NY 14304. Completed applications can also be placed in the secure drop box located outside of the back door of the Union Hall at this same address. Each applicant must also sign and send an affidavit (available online) along with the application.

If applying to both Electrician (Housewire or Residential) and Electrician programs, an applicant must fill out two applications. Applicants who do not have access to a printer may call the Union office at (716) 297-3650 to request an application form by mail or to schedule a time to pick up an application form.

Applicants must pay a $10.00 testing fee for in-house administration of an aptitude test. Applicants may request that this fee be waived. Fee waivers will be approved upon showing verifiable proof of financial need.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as TASC or GED). Must provide evidence of successfully completing high school algebra or an equivalent. Must provide proof of high school transcripts or equivalent at time of indenture.
  • Must be physically able to perform the work required of an electrician and electrician (Housewire or Residential), which includes:
    • Climbing and working from ladders, scaffolds, poles, or towers of various heights.
    • Crawling and working in confined spaces such as attics, manholes and crawlspaces.
  • Must pass a drug test, at the expense of the sponsor, after acceptance into the program.
  • Must qualify for an interview by obtaining a score of “4” or higher on the Electrical Trade Aptitude Test.
  • Must provide DD-214 to verify military background and training,if applicable, at time of indenture.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license. May be required to operate company vehicles.
  • Must be a resident, for at least one year, of either Niagara County or one of the following towns in Orleans County: Carlton, Ridgeway, Albion, Gaines, Shelby, Yates, or Barre.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
