 BUSINESS EXPANSIONS FOR THE HUDSON VALLEY REGION

Dutchess County

Key Bank recently opened a new branch at 55 Burnett Blvd. in Poughkeepsie. The new 2,800 square-foot branch is handicap-accessible with a 24-hour ATM, two drive-up lanes and an after-hours depository. No job numbers were announced.

 

Orange County

Stewart International Airport will receive a $2 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation to repair cracks in its runway. The money is part of the Airport Improvement Program administered by the Federal Aviation Administration. No job numbers were announced.

 

United Natural Foods, a national distributor of natural, organic and specialty foods, recently held a groundbreaking ceremony for its new 525,000 square-foot warehouse in the Town of Montgomery.  Construction of the new distribution center is scheduled for completion next year. The $55 million project is expected to create 400 jobs, which will mostly feature truck drivers, but will also include fork-lift operators, pallet-jack operators, mechanics and some inventory control positions. The new facility will be used for the distribution of products such as: Cliff Bar, San Pellegrino, Virgil Root Beer, Pirate Booty, and Kettle Potato Chips. The company will distribute 30,000 different products to 27 customers in the U.S. and Canada.

Rockland County

Cerovene, Inc., a small pharmaceutical company in Rockland,  is purchasing a 40,000 square-foot office complex at 10 Corporate Drive in Orangeburg as part of an $8 million expansion project. The company plan to expand its workforce from nine to 75 employees over the next seven years.

 

Sullivan County

Ulster County

Bread Alone has been awarded a $4.6 million federal loan to expand its operation. The loan from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Rural Development program will be used to buy a new 26,000 square-foot building on Ulster Avenue and renovate it into a commercial bakery and retail outlet. No final job numbers were announced.

 

Mid Hudson Medical Group of Wappinger Falls is leasing a soon to be constructed four-story, 84,000 square-foot medical office in the Town of Ulster. The $32.8 million building is being developed by Kirchhoff Medical Properties of Pleasant Valley. The medical building will have examination rooms and offices for doctors with specialties such as podiatry, pediatrics, neurology and imaging. The Ulster County Industrial Development Agency approved a $10 million, payment-in-lieu-of-taxes agreement for the developers. It is estimated that the project will create 59 jobs. 

 

Westchester County

Kawasaki Rail Car recently received a $1.8 billion contract to build up to 676 of the next generation train cars for Metro-North and Long Island railroads. Officials at Kawasaki stated that the contract will support 200 to 250 jobs. While much of the work will be performed at the Kawasaki plant in Lincoln, Neb., the contract requires 33.5 percent of it to be done in New York State. That includes the manufacture of items such as the horns and seats, as well as final assembly and testing at the company's facility in Yonkers.

 

Madison House, an affordable housing complex in White Plains, will undergo a $23 million renovation. The Westchester County Industrial Development Agency recently approved a $12 million tax-exempt bond financing to Marathon Development Group to renovate the 99-unit building. The project will create 75 construction jobs. Work is scheduled to begin in November and be completed in 18 months.

 

RiverMarket Bar & Kitchen, a fresh market and farm-to-table style restaurant recently opened in Tarrytown. The restaurant incorporates three different concepts into one space- the bar and kitchen, a fresh market and wine spirits section. The fresh market sells an assortment of local dairy and meat products, fish and produce. No job numbers were announced.

 

Rye Manor, a senior housing complex in the city of Rye, will undergo a $23 million renovation. The Westchester County Industrial Development Agency recently approved a $12 million tax-exempt bond financing to Rye Manor LLC. to renovate the facility. Renovation on the 100-unit senior housing facility will begin in November and be completed in about one year. The project is expected to create 75 construction jobs.

 

Smashburger, a fast growing restaurant franchise, will open its third location in Westchester County, in Greenburgh on September 30, 2013. The company plans to open seven more restaurants in Queens County, N.Y. and Fairfield County, Conn. by 2014.

White Plains Hospital was granted access to 108 million in tax-exempt bond financing by the Westchester County Local Development Corporation to construct a six-story patient care building, five new operating rooms and expanded outpatient radiology center. The project is expected to create 75 full-time union construction jobs.

 

White Plains Hospital Physician Associates recently celebrated the grand-opening of its new medical facility in the Wykagyl Shopping Center in New Rochelle. The center will provide primary care, dermatology, gastroenterology, hematology/oncology, endocrinology, obstetrical, gynecology, orthopedic and radiology services. No job numbers were announced.

 

William Raveis Real Estate, Mortgage & Insurance continued its expansion in Westchester County with the recent opening of a new office in Yorktown Heights. The company operates offices in Rye, Harrison, Katonah, Chappaqua, Tarrytown and Briarcliff Manor. No job numbers were available.

Rockland County

Pfizer announced plans to lay off another 70 employees at its Pearl River facility in Rockland County. Pfizer filed a WARN notice with the Labor Department on September 13, 2013 in anticipation of its latest round of job cuts.  The layoffs began on August 13, 2013 and will continue through December 17, 2013. The company has gone through several rounds of layoffs at the Rockland facility since it completed its acquisition of Wyeth Pharmaceuticals in October 2009.

 

Wenger NA, a company that distributes and markets Wenger army knives, watches and fragrances, filed a WARN notice on September 17, 2013 with the New York State Department of Labor in anticipation of a mass layoff. The company will lay off 48 employees when it closes its facility in Orangeburg on January 31, 2014 and transfers the business to its parent company, Victorinox, in Monroe, Ct.
