Air Stream Corp. Nassau 65 01-09-2007 The Town of Hempstead (Nassau) is seeking Empire Zone tax advantages for Air Stream Corp., a maker of food items for hospitals, hotels and the airline industry, even though the company is not within the official zone boundaries. The town is seeking to designate Air Stream, which it claims puts $3 million a year into the local economy a “regionally significant project”, which is a prerequisite to the company's receiving the tax breaks. Air Stream says if it receives the concessions, it plans to add 40,000 square feet to its 10,000 square-foot base and create 65 new, permanent manufacturing positions by 2011. American Defense Systems, Inc. Nassau 01-05-2007 American Defense Systems Inc., maker of armor systems to repel bullets and blasts, leased 103,050 more square feet of warehouse space in Hicksville (Nassau) – a space increase for the company of nearly 700 percent. American Defense has done work for the New York City Police Department and has a multi-year $44 million deal with the U.S. Army. (Long Island Business News – January 5, 2007) Update
Audiovox Corp Suffolk 115(Est.) 01-29-2007 UPDATE: Audiovox Corp. closed its $59 million acquisition of Thomson SA’s consumer electronics accessory business. (Long Island Business News – January 29, 2007) Hauppauge (Suffolk) – based Audiovox Corp. has agreed to pay $50 million to acquire Thomson SA’s electronics accessory business outside of Europe. Audio will add 115 employees in the United States, Canada, China, Hong Kong and Malaysia. The deal is expected to close early in 2007. (Newsday – December 22, 2006) Update
Canon USA Suffolk 850(Est.) 01-26-2007 UPDATE: The Suffolk County Industrial Development Agency (IDA) gave tentative approval to about $35 million in tax abatements and incentives - $19M in property tax abatements and $16.5 in breaks on sales taxes - for Canon USA to move into new, bigger headquarters in Melville (Suffolk). By the time the bill is final legislators plan to make the tax breaks contingent on Canon's meeting the targets it has set for increased hiring. The company currently employs about 1,260 at its HQ in Lake Success (Nassau) at an average salary of $70,000. The company claims it plans to increase employment to 2,110 by 2020. Comtech Telecommunications Suffolk 01-29-2007 UPDATE: Comtech Telecommunications Corp. said it received $9.5 million in orders in support of its Moving Tracking Systems contract with the U.S. Army. The orders include $8.9 million from the Army and $600,000 from the Army National Guard. Comtech has received $370.9 million against the contract. Comtech’s subsidiary, Comtech Mobile Datacom Corp., received the orders for the $418.2 million contract. (Long Island Business News – January 29, 2007) Melville (Suffolk) – based Comtech Telecommunications Corp. received a $24.3 million in orders from the Army for an ongoing Movement Tracking System Programs. The orders will fall under a previously received $418.2 million in total orders under the MTS contract. (Long Island Business News – November 7, 2006) Update
Marcum & Kliegman Suffolk 200(Est.) 01-19-2007 Despite the accounting crunch, Melville (Suffolk) based accounting firm Marcum & Kleigman hopes to hire 175 to 200 more employees in the near future. The firm, which has a satellite office in Manhattan, says 60 percent of its growth has occurred on Long Island. The firm employs 400 and handles 200 of the nation’s 10,000 hedge funds and 85 of the 14,000 publicly traded companies. (Long Island Business News – January 19, 2007) Update
