Bank of Smithtown Suffolk 05-21-2009 Unlike some larger banks, Bank of Smithtown (Suffolk County) turned down federal Troubled Asset Relief Program money in January, saying it did not need the cash. In March, it opened its first branch in Manhattan and is contemplating more branches there. The bank also announced plans to open seven new branches on Long Island in the second half of this year. Brookhaven National Laboratory Suffolk 1000(Est.) 05-06-2009 The Obama administration has awarded Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton (Suffolk County) $42 million in federal stimulus money to dismantle the lab’s three reactors. The money will allow the lab to complete in two years work that might otherwise have taken as long as until 2020. (Newsday – May 6, 2009)
Canon USA Nassau 1000(Est.) 05-10-2009 Suffolk County and other officials have drafted a new package of incentives worth $100 million to assure completion of an earlier plan for Canon USA to relocate from its Lake Success (Nassau County) headquarters to a new headquarters in Melville (Suffolk County), adding 1,000 new jobs. Gabreski Airport High-Tech Industrial Park Suffolk 1200(Est.) 05-12-2009 Suffolk County lawmakers on May 12 approved a 40-year lease of 58 acres at Gabreski Airport in Westhampton to Melville (Suffolk County)-based Rechler Equity Partners. Rechler plans to build a “high-tech hub”, complete with hotel and movie studio, at the airport, that would be an incubator for alternative energy, homeland security and wireless communication projects and prospectively generate 1,200 jobs. Sysco Corp. Suffolk 300(Est.) 05-07-2009 Sysco Corp, the nation’s largest food service company (and supplier of food for restaurants and food-service facilities), acquired a 526,000 square foot building in Central Islip (Suffolk County) for $30 million. The company plans to incorporate locally as Sysco Food Services of Long Island, to renovate a building formerly used by C&S Wholesale Grocers in Central Islip and to create 300 new jobs. Suffolk 121 05-18-2009 Brentwood (Suffolk County)-based manufacturer of architectural aluminum windows and doors, Mannix Exterior Wall Systems Inc. said that without an increase in orders the firm will need to lay off up to 121 employees after August 10, 2009. ProfitCenter Software Inc. Nassau 56 05-29-2009 The ProfitCenter Software Division of Systemax, Inc. has said that it will close its facility in Uniondale (Nassau) on August 27, 2009 and lay off 36 of the 56 employees. Twenty other workers will move to the Systemax's Port Washington (Nassau) headquarters. (WARN Notice, May 29, 2009)
