Getty Realty Corp. Nassau 10-01-2009 Jericho (Nassau)-based Getty Realty Corp. bought 36 Exxon gasoline stations and convenience stores in Maryland from ExxonMobil for $49 million. Getty is leasing the stores to a independent operator in Maryland. (Newsday – October 1, 2009)
Hydrogen Fuel Station in Point Lookout Nassau 10-26-2009 A combination of local and state funders, including LIPA and National Grid, have opened a $2.2-million hydrogen fuel station in Point Lookout (Nassau). No hydrogen-powered vehicles are commercially available to the public, and automakers are years away from mass marketing the cars, but the Town of Hempstead has ordered a shuttle bus that will be retrofitted for hydrogen power and used for senior services. Advocates at the station's opening Wednesday said building an infrastructure of hydrogen fuel stations will help propel the alternative-energy movement forward. (Newsday, October 26, 2009)
Misonix Inc. Nassau 10-08-2009 Farmingdale (Suffolk)-based Misonix Inc., a developer of ultrasonic medical device technology, has entered into a three year agreement with Neuro-technics, a British-based company, for the distribution of an ultrasonic bone cutter in the United Kingdom and Ireland. Stony Brook University Suffolk 10-14-2009 On October 11th Stony Brook Southampton University inaugurated a new 30,000-square-foot "green" library, the university's first building to meet Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards, a green building certification system developed by the U.S. Green Building Council. "Green" elements include skylights and windows that provide natural lighting to 75 percent of the building, a storm-water collection system, controls to ensure minimal energy use, and furnishings certified by Greenguard, which aims to keep indoor air clean. (Newsday, October 14, 2009)
Telephonics Corporation Nassau 10-29-2009 Farmingdale (Suffolk)-based Telephonics Corp. received a $45 million contract from the Sierra Nevada Corp. for production through March 2010 of additional devices used to jam the radio signals used to detonate improvised explosive devices (IEDs). In a separate announcement, the company said it received two contracts from Boeing Co. for $35 million to produce and support communication systems for the Air Force, to be delivered by the end of 2010. Eppendorf Inc. Nassau 44 10-09-2009 Eppendorf, Inc., a manufacturer of laboratory equipment located in Westbury (Nassau), filed a WARN notice on October 9, 2009 announcing the company's relocation to Connecticut by December 31, 2009. All 44 employees will lose their jobs.
Really Cool Food Nassau 78 10-16-2009 The Really Cool Food Company, LLC located in Syosett (Nassau) has filed a WARN notice announcing a plant closing that will mean job losses for 78 workers. All operations will cease by January 16, 2010. The United Food and Commercial Workers Union - Local 248-S represents the workers.
