API Heat Transfer Inc., a manufacturer of industrial strength heat transfer and exchanger systems in Cheektowaga, (Erie County) is planning a 32,000-square-foot expansion at its plant and could see the company add 75 workers to the current workforce of 249.

Starline USA Inc., a manufacturer of a variety of advertising and promotional products, is adding 39,000 square feet to its operation on Grand Island (Erie County) and is expected to add 41 workers, shifting jobs from Canada to the plant on Grand Island.

H.C. Brill in the town of Lancaster (Erie County), which had been targeted for shutdown in the fourth quarter of this year, will not close after all. The plant, which makes icings, fillings, and other bakery ingredients, will remain open, preserving 95 jobs, with help from the Lancaster Industrial Development Agency. The company is also expected to add 25 jobs and intends to carry out a plant expansion that could lead to an additional 20 or 30 jobs.

Wal-Mart is planning 8 new stores in Erie and Niagara Counties in the coming year. Construction is underway for a Wal-Mart super center in the Town of Niagara and is slated to open this spring. In the town of Hamburg, construction is underway for a Wal-mart super center that will replace an existing location about a mile away, and is slated to open next year. In the town of Evans and Town of Lancaster, construction is to begin in early summer. Three other locations have no time frame for construction as of yet.

Niagara Falls based Unifrax has chosen its Town of Tonawanda (Erie County) plant for a $20 million expansion and plans to add 50 jobs to the work force over the next two years.

The Connection is planning to open a customer service telephone call center in early May in Olean (Cattaraugus County). The center eventually could provide 600 jobs, in part because of the collapse of Adelphia Communications Corp. in Coudersport, Pa. Coudersport was the former headquarters of Adelphia.

Labor Disputes

Members of the United Steelworkers of America Local 4601 at Dresser-Rand Group’s plant in Olean, (Cattaraugus County) have approved a new three-year labor agreement that includes a 10.5 percent pay increase over the length of the deal. About 500 workers are represented by the union at the plant.

BlueCross BlueShield of Western New York has reached a contract with its unionized workers after six weeks of negotiations. About 500 workers are represented by Local 212 of the Office and Professional Employees International Union.
